You're probably sick of these intros being all "man, the Covid waiver makes the roster so weird", but while looking up Jordan Slaughter's offer list, I saw that he committed to Illinois on June 16, 2017. And now he's a redshirt sophomore with three years of eligibility.

June 17, 2017 seems like it was 17 years ago. President Trump had been in office less than five months. Mark Smith had committed to Brad Underwood six weeks prior. The Warriors beat the Cavs in five games earlier that week (the year after LeBron had brought the title back to Cleveland). The Cubs were the reigning World Series champs.

And now someone who committed to Illinois that month is a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman with three more years of eligibility.

I wonder if it feels like 17 years for Jordyn Slaughter. He's a senior in school but a sophomore on the depth chart. This will be his fourth fall camp. The linemen in his class (Julian Pearl, Verdis Brown, Slaughter) have seemingly been waiting 17 years behind Lowe, Palcho, and Kramer, and now Lowe, Palcho, and Kramer all get an additional year.

Last year, he finally got a start in the Penn State game. The way I remember it, Doug Kramer was injured for the PSU game (and Alex Palczewski was already out for the season with the ACL tear), so with Julian Pearl starting at right tackle in place of Palcho, Kendrick Green moved over to center for the Penn State game and Slaughter started at guard in his place.

And there's always been the question if Slaughter is a guard or a tackle. He's bounced around between right tackle and guard for most of his first three years. I even remember him practicing some left tackle at times. Right now, my guess is that he's a guard.

2021 Outlook

With every offensive lineman returning besides Green plus Blake Jeresaty entering the picture (Jeresaty transferred in last year but missed the season after shoulder surgery), not much has changed depth chart-wise. It might be as simple as replacing Green with Jeresaty and keeping the exact same depth chart as last year.

But then four of those guys will graduate (Lowe, Kramer, Palcho, Jeresaty), so 2022 is completely wide open on the offensive line. That's the target for Slaughter, I think. Be one of the five starting linemen coming out of spring ball in 2022. If he's not, especially with two years of eligibility at that point, I could see him choosing to transfer and play out his final two seasons somewhere else. If he is one of the starters coming out of spring ball, then he's probably a two-year starter in 2022 and 2023.
